<Text>In the summer of 200203, acclaimed writer and historian Tom Griffiths voyaged the Southern Ocean to Antarctica. He was on board the first Australian ship to slice the silence of a year, arriving at Casey Station to deliver the new team of winterers and take away the old. In Slicing the Silence Griffiths interweaves his own diary entries with rich and engaging essays on Antarctic history, science and culture.</Text>

<Text>This book warns of a future where the hardest schools for Australian parents to get their kids into will be public ones. With insight, passion and a great sense of urgency Chris Bonnor and Jane Caro show how government, anxious parents, the church and ideology are combining to undermine public schools. The Stupid Country is not a one-sided defence of public education. But it challenges us to consider whether we really want to continue stumbling blindly down our current path, risking the health of our public schools and everything they have created our prosperity, unity, stability even, perhaps, our democracy. </Text>

<Text>Obsessed with our own youth and wanting perfect, genius children who live in a world of designer clothes and toys, Idolising Children says its time for us to find new ways of parenting and a new kind of childhood. We need to remove the guilt that comes with trying to be perfect parents. In his eye-opening book Daniel Donahoo asks us to respect children and allow them to experience childhood with all its ups and downs. </Text>

<Text>A unique book that combines an appreciation of Aboriginal art with contemporary theoretical concerns. On one level it is a beautifully illustrated book about contemporary Aboriginal art from the Central Desert of Australia, which has become immensely popular in the worlds art markets. At the same time the book will draw on various theoretical considerations as it attempts to define, explain and understand this art.</Text>

<Text>Much has been written about the White Australia Policy, but very little has been written about it from a Chinese perspective. Big White Lie shifts our understanding of the White Australia Policy and indeed White Australia by exploring what Chinese Australians were saying and doing at a time when they were officially excluded. Big White Lie pays close attention to Chinese migration patterns, debates, social organisations, and their business and religious lives and shows that they had every right to be counted as Australians, even in White Australia. The books focus on Chinese Australians provides a refreshing new perspective on the important role the Chinese have played in Australias past at a time when Chinas likely role in Australias future is more compelling than ever.</Text>

<Text>This book emphasises the importance of time sovereignty that is the capacity of people to bank time so that they can vary their work commitments in the light of caring responsibilities, their need for further education and training or because they may at certain periods be carrying more community leadership responsibility. It is a book of big ideas such as the need for learning accounts, as well as new institutional arrangements that help people to manage difficult transitions in life. </Text>

<Text>The third edition of the authoritative reference work Australian Protocol & Procedures is a comprehensive guide to all aspects of behaviour in public and private occasions. Renowned for its clear and straightforward language, the books coverage of subjects was truly vast, including official protocol and procedures such as in Parliamentary settings, visits by heads of state (including royals), religious observances, court proceedings, the honours system and decorations and as more private protocols associated with invitations, wedding receptions, funerals and dress codes. Now thoroughly revised and updated for the 21st century. </Text>

<Text>On 19 March 1932, after nine years planning and building, more than a million Australians crossed the newly opened Sydney Harbour Bridge, the largest arch bridge in the world. This lavishly illustrated book celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It tells the extraordinary story of its design and construction and how it became a much-loved feature of the city, from the time of De Groot cutting the official ribbon when it opened, to spectacular fireworks and bridge-climbers today. </Text>

<Text>A raft of recent political scandals in Australia has generated widespread media and public interest in the role and accountability of ministerial staffers, and their impact on relations between ministers and their public service advisers. Such scandals include the notorious Children overboard affair and the more recent AWB imbroglio. In Power without responsibility Anne Tiernan describes the contemporary working environment of political staffers, their formal and less formal roles, the challenges they face, and the forces that have escalated the growth in their numbers and influence.</Text>

<Text>Australia is the only democratic country in the world that does not have a national charter or bill that protects basic human rights. Many countries have a constitutional bill of rights; many others have legislated to create charters of rights. Australia is the odd country out. In this fully updated edition of his influential book, The Case for an Australian Bill of Rights, lawyer and commentator George Williams argues that the Australian parliament should create a charter of rights drawing on the successful examples of New Zealand and the United Kingdom. He shows how the case for reform has grown stronger in recent years, and how the momentum for change has accelerated with the creation of charters of rights in the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria.</Text>

<Text>In this book Libby Robin explores the links between nature and nation. By looking at some of those who observe the natural world most closely including scientists, field naturalists and farmers she tells the story of how we as a nation have come to understand our land. Having left the cultural cringe behind, settler Australians are struggling with the strange nature of this continent. Robin suggests new ways of living in an arid and urbanised continent in times of global change, and gives hope that Australia can move beyond the biological cringe.</Text>

<Text>The significance of the AWB scandal extends well beyond its immediate political impact. Its lasting lessons go to the heart of how government and companies are run in Australia. In this book Stephen Bartos explores those lessons, and shows that reform will be needed to provide the assurance that this country is committed to transparency and accountability. </Text>

<Text>This is the story of William Blighs second and successful voyage to bring breadfruit trees from Tahiti to the West Indies in the year 1791, in the ship HMS Providence. The British Admiralty also gave him the assignment of mapping the treacherous Torres Straits between Australia and New Guinea on his way home. The author of this tale is the young George Tobin, Blighs young third lieutenant on the Providence. Matthew Flinders was a fellow crew member on the journey. This book describes the journey of the Providence as witnessed by George Tobin and retold through his journal entries and sketches in ink and watercolours. </Text>

<Text>From the last years of the 19th century through the first three decades of the 20th century many Australian architects, planners and urban reformers fell under the influence of the international City Beautiful movement, which was burgeoning in North America and parts of Europe at the time. These architects and planners became actively aware of a need to make the country's cities not just efficient, productive and safe to live and work in, but also works of art.
Designing Australias Cities is a pioneering study that chronicles and celebrates the ideas, influences, outcomes and enduring legacies of this significant, though often under-appreciated, artistic turn in Australian urban design, which set Australian urban planning and development within a new international context. </Text>

<Text>In the First World War, Australian reactions to death were defined by
distance, a circumstance that impelled mourners towards communal responses to their loss. It drove them to create and sustain links with the graves that most knew they would never see. A widespread recognition of this condition resulted in an Australian community keenly aware of the shared nature of their grief.</Text>

<Text>From the award-winning Mark Greenwood (The Legend of Lasseters Reef and The Legend of Moodyne Joe) comes Fortuyns Ghost, a haunting tale of shipwreck on the high seas. In 1724, the Dutch East India Company ship Fortuyn vanished after leaving the Cape of Good Hope, bound for Batavia. Stowed below deck was the Companys trading cash (a rich cargo of silver ingots, bullion and coins), all sealed in ten oak money chests. Fortuyns Ghost imagines the doomed ships fateful voyage to its likely end on Western Australias treacherous Shipwreck Coast - a place well known for nautical hauntings.</Text>

<Text>On 12 February, 1916, two hundred residents of Mount Hawthorn in Perth, Western Australia rallied together to build a cottage over the course of a single day for one of the first wounded ANZAC soldiers to return from the Gallipoli. <Text>Some parts of the Australian landscape are more than 100 million years old. The dinosaurs roamed a land in which Kakadu, the Macdonnell and Flinders ranges, the Arcoona Plateau and the Mt Lofty Ranges, and many parts of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia and the Eastern Uplands were recognisably present. Landscape remnants of equal age are probably preserved in other continents, in parts of southern Africa and South America, for instance, but a combination of circumstances has permitted many of the very old Australian surfaces to be dated with reasonable confidence. Thus in Australia some landscape elements are much older than the accepted theory suggests they ought to be. This has serious implications for general geomorphological theory and for the conventional models of landscape evolution. </Text>

<Text>For all but a few months from her commissioning in June 1939 to her sinking on 1 March 1942, the Australian light cruiser Perth was engaged in wartime operations against the forces of Germany, Italy, Vichy France and Japan. Despite all this active service, up until her sinking, she had lost fewer than a dozen of her company to enemy action. Using diaries kept by members of her ships company to supplement British, Australian, German, Italian and Japanese official sources, Ian Pfennigwerth has provided a picture of the men who contributed to the ships proud record and the conditions under which they did so. </Text>

<Text>The book is unique, spanning the gap between botany and indigenous studies. It differs from other published Australian bushtucker overviews by treating the study of plants as a window upon which to delve into Aboriginal culture. The topic of Aboriginal use and perception of plants is vast and therefore far too large for full treatment of all regions in a single volume. Nevertheless, this book offers an overview to assist readers appreciate the depth of indigenous ecological knowledge about the environment.</Text>

<Text>Harry was 13 when his father died. He has reconstructed his fathers life, and where information was spare, has carefully researched how such people lived. Discovering harsh the life of a stockman , a shearer and a general labourer. Harry has illuminated his fathers life with material such as letters home from the battlefront, photographs, including those of such necessities as snake bit kits. Clem Hills life was one of hard work, harsh conditions, tempered by his skill as a bushman. During his military service Clem was wounded three times and it was only when his arm and shoulder were shattered that he was considered unfit for service. The severe wounds he received affected him for the rest of his life (one arm being rendered almost useless). This is a picture of life in rural Australia before, during and after World War 1 and during the Depression. </Text>

<Text>The first edition of this book appeared as a 272 page work three decades ago, its main aim being to provide a potted examination of the multiplicity of steam, diesel and electric locomotives that have graced this country from 1854. Since this first humble appearance, the book has grown in content, photography and style, and examining in some detail the massive technological changes that have swept onto the Australian locomotive scene. With an up-to-date map of the nations rail system and photographs provided by some of the nations more dedicated photographers, Locomotives of Australia continues to provide a concise profile of the countrys diversified motive power, both private and government, in what is the largest railway book yet produced in this country.</Text>

<Text>This book is a practical guide and tool designed for graziers to use in their day-to-day decision making about livestock health, nutritional needs and condition scoring. It will be a very useful book in drought situations, but also in seasonal pasture shortages, such as winter and late summer when the nutrient value of pastures is low. The book also includes tables and worksheets so that livestock producers can make timely and cost effective decisions about supplementary feeding.</Text>

<Text>The strange tawny frogmouth is often thought to be a species of owl, but it is, in fact, related to nightjars. A true master of disguise, the tawny frogmouth can sit a few metres from you and still not be spotted. So well camouflaged is this night hunter that it roosts in the open during the day, passing easily for a dead tree stump. At night it feeds on rats, mice, cicadas, beetles, frogs and other small prey. This is a fascinating look at an intriguing native species.</Text>

<Text>The rat-kangaroo was one of the first Australian marsupials to be seen alive in Europe. Collected close to the settlement at Sydney Cove, a pair of them were exhibited in London in 1789. These animals were called by the local Aboriginal people 'Pot-o-roo', and by the European settlers, 'Kangooroo rat'. They were the Long-nosed Potoroo, Potorous tridactylus, the first of what we now call 'Rat-kangaroos' to be discovered. Bettongs, Rat-kangaroos and Potoroos provides an extraordinary glimpse into the secretive lives of these unusual marsupials.</Text>

<Text>Explains how our attitudes to risk and uncertainty influence our decision making and how much we stand to lose from rapid climate change. It outlines the current concerns of the major international players and reviews the response to date, detailing national interests. <Text>This diverse collection of contemporary plays from all over Australia includes: Bitin Back by Vivienne Cleven, adapted from her novel of the same name this funny and perceptive play explores stereotyping, identity and race relations in a Queensland country town; Black Medea by Wesley Enoch, this richly poetic adaptation of Euripides Medea, blends the cultures of Ancient Greek and indigenous storytelling to weave a bold and breathtaking commentary on contemporary Black experience; Rainbows End, by Jane Harrison, set in the 1950s, in northern Victorian. It creates a resonant snapshot of one particular Koori family to dramatise the struggle for decent housing, meaningful education, jobs and community acceptance; the acclaimed King Hit by Geoffrey Narkle and David Milroy, tells the remarkable life story of Geoffrey Narkle which strikes at the very heart of the Stolen Generation, exploring the impact on an individual and a Culture when relationships are brutally broken; and Windmill Baby by David Milroy. Winner of the 2003 Patrick White Award (the only indigenous play to win this award).</Text>

<Text>Convincing Ground is a wide ranging, personal and powerful work which resonates with historical and contemporary Australian debates about identity, dispossession, memory and community. For Pascoe, the Australian character was not forged at Gallipoli, Eureka and the back of Bourke, but in the more satanic furnace of Murdering Flat, Convincing Ground and Werribee. He knows we cant reverse the past, but we can bring our soul in from the fog of delusion. He proposes a way forward, beyond shady intellectual argument and immature nationalism: strengths intact; weaknesses acknowledged and addressed.</Text>

<Text>On 27 May 1967 an overwhelming majority of electors voted in a national referendum to amend clauses of the Australian Constitution concerning Aboriginal people. 27 May 2007 is the 40th anniversary of this landmark event. The referendum is commonly considered the turning point in Australian historical and cultural life. The historic moment when citizenship rights were granted including the vote and the Commonwealth finally assumed responsibility for Aboriginal affairs. This book explores the legal and political significance of the referendum and the long struggle by Australians for constitutional change.</Text>

<Text>An exploration of the way knowledge is produced within academic disciplines and then reproduced as public knowledge and used by governments. Nakata, a Torres Strait Islander academic, casts a critical gaze on the 1890s Cambridge Expedition researchers to the Torres Strait. He meticulously analyses the linguistic, psychological, anthropological and other scientific projects of the expedition, and offers an astute critique of their research methods and interpretations.

<Text>For many people, the first experience of marine environments is amazement at the bewildering variety of life in the oceans. Sea anemones and corals, sea stars and sea urchins, octopuses and squids are just a few marine creatures that we never encounter on land or in freshwater. Many other creatures are even less familiar, and it is often difficult for those interested in marine life to learn more about them. The aim of this introductory book is to introduce the diversity of life in the seas and to help newcomers to marine biology recognise the main kinds of marine organisms. The examples selected, focus on Victoria and southern Australia. The emphasis is on animals and plants that are commonly seen by divers, snorkellers, beachcombers, rock poolingers, and by anyone with an interest in marine life.</Text>

<Text>Polar dinosaurs of Victoria introduces the reader to Victoria as it was millions of years ago, when dinosaurs the size of chickens roamed around the polar landscape and Antarctica could be reached by land. Since the first dinosaur bone was discovered in 1903 in coastal Victoria, up to 8 different species of dinosaur have been discovered in this part of Australia. Palaeontologist Thomas Rich describes the arduous but exciting process of a dinosaur dig and the amazing reconstruction that takes place to create a realistic portrait of these creatures from fossil bones. Polar dinosaurs describes the species and behaviour of these Victorian dinosaurs, and contains colour photographs and charts. In addition, there are beautiful colour illustrations of the dinosaurs from famous scientific artists. The book also contains a first-hand account of a dinosaur dig written by the authors daughter; sure to appeal to students dreaming of going on a real fossil hunt.</Text>

<Text>Our national language, and the culture from which it has formed, is the rightful inheritance of all English-speaking people. It deserves to be taught with knowledge and respect. English is now spoken, also, by more than 500 million people around the world. They need the opportunity to learn to speak and write it confidently, and correctly. Grammar provides a language to talk about language. As a mechanic needs naming words for the parts of an engine, so a student needs naming words for the components of speech and writing. This practical book provides all who learn or teach Grammar with these skills in a clear step-by-step process. It provides teachers with an armoury of learning strategies to use at all levels. Grammar should be fun to teach and fun to learn.

<Text>The fourth book in the series that revolves around the many colourful characters who come and go at No. 44 Scotland Street. McCall Smith handles the characters with his customary charm and deftness - the stalwart Tory chartered surveyor, the pushy mother, and, most importantly in this novel, the beleaguered Italian-speaking prodigy, Bertie. This is classic McCall Smith - clever, witty and entertaining - and beautifully illustrated. A chance encounter with Armistead Maupin in San Francisco inspired Alexander McCall Smith to write this series of novels based around the fictional No. 44 Scotland Street in Edinburgh's New Town.</Text>

<Text>Early fifth century, Europe, and two old friends, now bitter rivals, face each other on the battlefield. Attila, leader of the Huns, has become corrupted by power, while Aetius, last of the great Roman generals, has been ennobled by it. Ross Laidlaws masterful portrayal of these two figures is based on his extensive knowledge of the period and is written in a narrative style that vividly evokes the brutality, decadence and desperation of the last desperate struggles of the Roman Empire.</Text>

<Text>Growing up in rural Nottinghamshire, Arabella Cordon sees life through a filter of fairytales. She idolises her father, but his enthusiasm is reserved for steam engines, motorcycles and Margaret Thatcher. On the day Thatcher comes to power, Arabellas life changes irrevocably. Alone and adrift in London, she takes a job as a striptease artist in Soho and makes friends with Saf, who is searching for her lost father amongst the citys homeless. Unlike Saf, Arabella is determined to leave the past behind, but she is haunted by the ghosts of fathers missing fathers, pseudo fathers, fantasy fathers. In the icy years presided over by Britains first female prime minister, Arabellas own identity and survival are inextricably linked to the question of what a father is.</Text>

<Text>Mildred insists that after leading the impromptu conga, knitting-needles in her hands, at the end of the Kireba Sewing Circles monthly knees-up at Harrods, she had returned the needles to their usual place. And while she has to admit that the memory of someone born during East Africas Great Flood of 1932 might not be entirely reliable, she has no doubt that the two paw paws have also gone missing. Suspicion first falls on Titus Ntoto, 15-year-old leader of the Mboya Boys, Kirebas toughest gang, and then on Ferdinand Mlumba, kitchen toto turned police informer, universally reviled as Fatboy. The explanation of this bizarre theft (and how Fatboy wins back his name) is revealed when Jasper Japer, visiting UK television satirist, is caught up in a clash between a gang of street kids and a group of Japanese tourists. It is an encounter with devastating consequences.</Text>

<Text>The book goes to the heart of why many New Zealanders feel disillusioned about politics. Nicky Hager believes that the way politicians and others in politics conduct themselves the games they play to advance themselves can harm the whole political system. Exposing their activities is the first step towards change. There has never been a book about New Zealand politics like this before. Over a two year period, sources from inside the National Party provided Nicky Hager with an astonishing collection of internal reports, emails, appointment diaries, meeting minutes and face-to-face interviews, documenting the rise to power of Don Brash and a two year campaign to become government. The result is an unprecedented picture of the internal workings of a political party and a disturbing, but riveting study into the nature of modern politics.</Text>

<Text>A highly innovative new tramping guide, that has been developed around the latest generation of birds eye computer-generated maps. These completely accurate panoramic overviews are constructed from map data, but because they can recreate a view of the landscape from any angle or height they provide a remarkably readable and clear way of understanding the lie of the land. For trampers, these birds eye maps offer a superb way of showing a tramping route in three dimensions, which cannot be done with a conventional topographical map. In this book the 40 most popular tramps in New Zealand are featured, each illustrated with at least one birds eye map.</Text>
