<Text>Through his writing, teaching and public speaking, Charles Birch has drawn attention to the relationship between science and religion and the ways in which they shape our attitudes to the world around us. In this timely book, he discusses the influences on his life and work that led to him forming a philosophy that combines science and religion. With a series of conversational snapshots of his mentors, including some of the most eminent scientists, philosophers and theologians of the 20th century such as Paul Tillich and Reinhold Niebuhr, Birch shows how his ideas developed. In the second part of the book he explains the philosophy that he came to form, known as 'Process Thought', which seeks to reconcile these opposites. This memoir summarises the influences on, the life and the work of an important Australian thinker and writer.</Text>

<Text>In the early years of the 20th century Australians embraced the sea as a source of health, exercise and fun none more so than the locals at Sydneys Freshwater Beach. Freshie presents the lively history of the first hundred years of the Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club, exploring how and why the Club developed as it did, the standout characters and stories from amongst its membership, the valiant rescues, competitive highlights, the triumphs and tragedies. Lavishly illustrated with a vast array of archival photographs, the book tells both the fascinating history of a unique surf life saving club yet also reflects wider changes in the Australian social climate, from the impact of two world wars to the admission of women to full membership.</Text>

<Text>For much of the last century the cockatoo was generally viewed as a common part of the landscape, often existing in plague proportions, and an intelligent, if somewhat cantankerous, inhabitant of the backyard 'cocky cage'. Today, some species are struggling to hang on in an environment that has been heavily modified by humans. Extensively illustrated, Cockatoos looks at the ecology and conservation of these iconic birds, including their evolution, distribution, movements, feeding and reproduction. It examines the illegal trade in cockatoos, the role of aviculturists, and the attempts to ensure the recovery of many species through appropriate and well-managed captive breeding programs.</Text>

<Text>Written with searing passion and dazzling momentum, Myth, Propaganda and Disaster in Nazi Germany and Contemporary America reverberates with the aftershocks of September 11. With compelling drive and theatrical daring, we are swept from cocktails at the Guggenheim to the hungry vacuum of Ground Zero. Stephen Sewell demands answers to some of the most urgent questions of our times.
A savage comedy of manners, It Just Stopped explores our relationship to art, globalisation, death, technology, America, Campari, cardboard boxes and slavery. Sewells play is funny and shocking in turn. It holds the mirror up to the things we value today and asks the questions: what will we value the day the world just stops, and what would we be willing to trade for our own survival?</Text>

<Text>Papunya Painting explores the lost chapter of the Papunya Tula western desert art movement. Beautifully illustrated it includes essays from experts in the field and also provides readers with interpretation of the iconography in the artworks. The 30 works that will feature in the book fall between the period 1972, when Geoffrey Bardon, the art teacher credited with initiating the Papunya movement, left Papunya and the early to mid 1980s, when the first desert canvases were being included in art galleries. This period has been overlooked in all Papunya Tula exhibitions and publications and most of the works have not been seen by Australian audiences in the three decades since they were painted. The book will introduce and explore these canvases as cultural documents in the social milieu of the Papunya settlement and in the wider history of Aboriginal art and social change.</Text>

<Text>This essential collection from Lewis Grassic Gibbon comprises short stories, essays and a novel, The Speak of the Mearns, which was unfinished at the time of the authors death in 1935. Grassic Gibbons fame rests mainly on the trilogy, A Scots Quair, and the short stories, some well known, exhibit the same elements powerful, dramatic writing and a distinctive local flavour found in the novels. The Speak of the Mearns is a sharply observed unsentimental portrait of a rural coastal community seen through the eyes of a young boy growing up there. The essays put on record the authors views on politics and religion.

<Text>Robert works on the buses and lives in a no-bedroomed Glasgow flat with his wife and child. His job is boring, the weather is lousy, and hes becoming increasingly aware that his plans to emigrate wont come to anything. Life, as he sees it, is a very perplexing kettle of coconuts. James Kelmans first novel is an uncompromising, humane and extremely funny portrait of a mans life.</Text>

<Text>In this fascinating book, Dane Love uncovers a strange collection of tales of devious fraudsters and curious hoaxes. Spanning the 18th century to the present day, these tales range from the quaint to the absurd, touching on all social classes and settings in society. Among them are the phoney minister who established a church and performed illegal marriage ceremonies, a middle-aged gentleman who passed himself off as an adolescent schoolboy, and the man who persuaded the world that he was the prince of an imaginary country. This book also looks at more familiar Scottish mysteries such as those surrounding the Loch Ness monster, the Great Highland Hoax of Ossians poems, and the Burns Temple Hoax. This highly entertaining read makes us realise just how gullible many of us have been and may also continue to be.</Text>

<Text>Leading political biographer and author of the bestselling biography of Muldoon now writes a definitive life of another prime minister, Keith Holyoake. Though Holyoake was often derided as pompous and unprincipled, a master of consensus and compromise, Gustafson shows a man with astute understanding of people and political issues, skilled at defusing division and preserving order while encouraging gradual and incremental progress. Gustafson deftly sets this life in the context of a complex and changing society in a way that reveals Holyoakes ability to sense the spirit of the times, to exploit the luck that came his way and to stay in power for so long. </Text>

<Text>Colin McCahon: The Titirangi Years was suggested by the McCahon House Trust which has overseen the restoration and preservation of the house in French Bay where McCahon and his family lived in the 1950s. The book gives a comprehensive overview of this crucial period in the work of this great painter. Seven chapters with accompanying black and white images cover McCahons job at the Auckland City Art Gallery, the Titirangi house and setting, the changes in his art practice and the trip to the US in 1958. The text is followed by reproductions in full colour of 80 of the most important paintings of the period.</Text>

<Text>The South Island of New Zealand is brown trout country without peer. Amazingly
varied landscapes and waterways greet the angler at every turn of the road. Streams range from tiny lowland spring creeks to huge, snow-fed giants. Some are flanked by original native forest; others traverse tussock lands or meander through farmland. A Stroll Through Brown Trout Country is a celebration of the authors' exploration together of brown trout habitat, spanning more than three decades.</Text>

<Text>THIS GROUNDBREAKING BOOK is the first to be published internationally that examines the link between one of the proteins in the milk we drink and a range of serious illnesses, including heart disease, Type 1 diabetes, autism and schizophrenia. These health problems are linked to a tiny protein fragment that is formed when we digest A1 beta-casein, a milk protein produced by many cows in New Zealand, Australia and other western countries. </Text>

<Text>Announcements of an impending victory over the Taliban have been repeated ad nauseam since the Allied invasion of Afghanistan in 2002, particularly after the Presidential elections of 2004 which were said to have marked the moral and psychological defeat of the Taliban. In March 2006, both Afghan and American officials were still claiming, just before a series of particularly ferocious clashes, that the Taliban are no longer able to fight large battles. Later that year, the mood in the media had turned to one of defeatism, even of impending catastrophe. In reality, as early as 2003-5 there was a growing body of evidence that cast doubt on the official interpretation of the conflict. Rather than there having been a 2006 surprise, Giustozzi argues that the Neo-Taliban insurgency had put down strong roots as early as 2003, a phenomenon he investigates in this timely and thought-provoking book.</Text>

<Text>Most historical accounts examine the Viking Age in one part rather than the whole region of the British Isles and Ireland. Very few pay attention to the continued contact between England and Scandinavia in the post-Norman Conquest period. This book aims to offer an alternative approach by presenting a history of the Viking Age which considers the whole area up to and beyond the Norman Conquest of 1066.</Text>

<Text> Celebrated by Matthew Arnold as the 'city of dreaming spires', Oxford has a long and illustrious history as one of Europe's oldest university towns. Its colleges, libraries and museums, ranging from the medieval to the modern, testify to the city's academic traditions and the dominant influence of 'gown' over 'town'. But there is another Oxford, the city of car factories and housing estates, high-tech research and alternative culture.</Text>

<Text>The most European of South American cities, Buenos Aires evokes exile and nostalgia. A nineteenth-century replica of Paris or Madrid set adrift in an alien continent, its identity is neither of the Old World nor the New. The citys rootlessness has famously found expression in the melancholy of tango and, more recently, in a vogue for psycho-analysis even more widespread than New Yorks. </Text>

<Text>The author enriches our understanding of this vast breeding ground of poets,
Empires, mystics and saints through an inspired collection of the best
of over three thousand years of descriptive writing. This journey begins with life during the reigns of the earliest of the Persian rulers, Cyrus and Xerxes and journey through Persian life, history and culture, taking in the world of the Parthians, the forgotten dynasty of Iran, and the second Persian empire of the Sassanians. It continues in the company of great minds with John Simpsons interview with Ayatollah Khomeini, Robert Byron during his elegiac revelation of the beauty of Isfahan, Jason Elliot in modernday Tehran, and Christophe de Bellaigues investigation into modern martyrdom and a wonderful insight into the Iranian psyche.</Text>

<Text>An exhaustively researched, deftly written examination of Bangkok- the city
that Chinese traders once called The Village of the Wild Plum. Alec Waugh, brother of Evelyn, and bestselling author of Island in the Sun and Loom of Youth; first came to Siam in September 1926, and was immediately enchanted by the miasma of Bangkok, and its colourful inhabitants. Returning some thirty years later for a series of extended visits; Waugh resolved to document the history of this uniquely fascinating metropolis. Bangkok is an informative, yet always entertaining history of Bangkok and
its people.</Text>

<Text>Poet, archaeologist, classical scholar and priest, but above all these things, Peter Levi was a Hellenophile. The Hill of Kronos is the fruit of Levis unending love affair with the Greek language and with the people and places of Greece. It is a hymn to the country in three parts, sung by a scholar in his youth, a politically engaged priest in middle age, and finally in the mellow voice of a poet approaching old age. This is a book of travels redolent of the scent of mountains in the mid-afternoon heat, but also cut through with assured learning, for Peter Levi made the translations of Pausaunias the original guide-book to Greece of the classical era for the Penguin Classics.</Text>

both visitors to and residents of Istanbul are immortalised in this collection.
The exquisite love poetry of the Ottomans, the epic sagas of the Turkish
nationalists, the epigrams of sultans, and the romantic couplets of visiting
diplomats are contrasted in thematic chapters. A cosmopolitan city from its earliest history, this collection includes poetry by and about Turks, Jews, Kurds, gypsies, Armenians, Greeks, and Russians. Featuring: W B Yeats, Sergei Esenin, Nazim Hikmet, Charles Kingsley, Lord Byron, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Bedri Rahmi Eyuboglu, Orhan Veli, Vita Sackville-West and Suleyman the Magnificent.</Text>

<Text>The finest Moorish love poetry drawn from Medieval Andalucia, giving an elegiac flavour of a Paradise on earth, briefly found & enjoyed, only to be irretrievably lost. This collection resonates with a powerful lust for life, a desire for love and the rich enchantments of wine, laughter, moonlit picnics and bare flesh... or are these truly all spiritual metaphors? Andalus features some of the earliest poetry written, dating from a time when Al Andalus carried the torch of the Arab language, with poems composed in Spain, but recited in Marrakesh, Baghdad, Delhi and Samarkand.</Text>

<Text>Somewhere in the world there may be a noisier street than Acharnon Street; but I hope not. 92 Acharnon Street is a loving portrait of Athens in all its dusty, dirty, trafficridden reality, complete with bars, prostitutes, corruption and imperious bureaucrats. This is a book about Greeks not just Greece, in all their rich and confusing humanity.</Text>

<Text>Drawing on declassified government documents, studio archives and filmmakers private papers, Shaw reveals the different ways in which cinematic propaganda was produced, disseminated, and received by audiences during the Cold War. In the process, he blends subjects as diverse as womens fashions, McCarthyism, drug smuggling, Christianity, and American cultural diplomacy in India. His conclusions about Hollywoods versatility and power have a contemporary resonance which will interest anyone wishing to understand wartime propaganda today.</Text>

<Text>This book is the only poker book available that caters specifically to online sit-n-go (SNG) single-table low-limit Texas Holdem tournaments. More importantly, it is the only poker book that guides the reader on a progressive path upward through the various limits, with only the information necessary to win with any bankroll or skill level to beat that specific low limit. Presented in a series of steps, the book provides guidelines that help tell the reader when to move up to a higher limit. SNGs have very predictable durations (40-60 minutes) so the reader could effectively set aside blocks of time to play.</Text>

<Text>"At the dawn of the twentieth century, observers heralded a new era of social progress, seemingly limitless technological advances, and world peace. But within only a few years, the world was perched on the brink of war, revolution, and human misery on an unprecedented scale. Is it possible that today, in the early twenty-first century, we are on the verge of similar, tumultuous times?"

"Blending a detailed knowledge of international security affairs with history, philosophy, psychology, and literature, Thrse Delpech vividly reminds us of the signs and warnings that were missed as the "civilized" world failed to prevent the world wars, Holocaust, Soviet death camps, and Cambodian killing fields that made the twentieth century so deadly."

Drawing a parallel between 1905 and 2005, Delpech warns that it could happen again in this current era of increasing international violence and global lawlessness. She looks ahead to imagine various scenarios and regions that could provide flashpoints in the future. </Text>

<Text>The Digital Age was expected to usher in an era of clean production, an alternative to smokestack industries and their pollutants. But as environmental journalist Elizabeth Grossman reveals in this penetrating analysis of high tech manufacture and disposal, digital may be sleek, but it's anything but clean. Deep within every electronic device lie toxic materials that make up the bits and bytes, a complex thicket of lead, mercury, cadmium, plastics, and a host of other often harmful ingredients. High Tech Trash is a wake-up call to the importance of the e-waste issue and the health hazards involved.</Text>

<Text>In 1961, President John F. Kennedy ignited Americas Apollo Project and sparked a revolution in space exploration. Today the New Apollo Energy Project is poised to revolutionize the production of energy and thereby save our planet. The nation that built the worlds most powerful rockets, its most
advanced computers, and its most sophisticated life support systems is ready to create the worlds most powerful solar energy systems, its most advanced wind energy turbines, and its most sophisticated hybrid cars. This will result in nothing less than a second American Revolution. Who are the dreamers in California who believe they can use mirrors and liquid metal to wring more electricity from a ray of sunshine than anyone else on earth can? This is a thoughtful, optimistic book, based on sound facts. No one before has tied together the concepts of economic growth and greenhouse gas reductions with such concrete examples.</Text>

<Text>Ask children where food comes from, and theyll probably answer: the supermarket. Ask most adults, and their replies may not be much different. Where our foods are raised and what happens to them between farm and supermarket shelf have become mysteries. How did we become so disconnected from the sources of our breads, beef, cheeses, cereal, apples and countless other foods that nourish us every day? Ann Vileisis answer is a sensory-rich journey through the history of making dinner. Kitchen Literacy takes us from an eighteenth-century garden to todays sleek supermarket aisles, and
eventually to farmers markets that are now enjoying a resurgence.</Text>

<Text>What happens when love is no longer enough? Jane Bernstein thought that learning to accept her daughter's disabilities meant her struggles were over. But as Rachel grew up and needed more than a parent's devotion, both mother and daughter were confronted with formidable obstacles.
Rachel in the World, which begins in Rachel's fifth year and ends when she turns twenty-two, tells of their barriers and successes with the same honesty and humor that made Loving Rachel, Bernstein's first memoir, a classic in its field. </Text>

As one of the best-known honky-tonkers to appear in the wake of Hank Williams's death, Faron Young was a popular presence on Nashville's music scene for more than four decades. The Singing Sheriff produced a string of Top Ten hits, placed more than eighty songs on the country music charts, and founded the longrunning
country music periodical Music City News in 1963. Flamboyant, impulsive, and
generous, he helped and encouraged a new generation of talented songwriter-performers that included Willie Nelson and Bill Anderson. In 2000, four years after his untimely death, Young was inducted into the Country Music Hall of
Fame.</Text>

<Text>Zane Grey was a disappointed aspirant to major league baseball and an unhappy dentist when he belatedly decided to take up writing at the age of thirty. He went on to become the most successful American author of the 1920s, a significant figure in the early development of the film industry, and a central player in the early popularity of the Western. Thomas H. Pauly's work is the first full-length biography of Grey to appear in over thirty years.

His readings and live performances sell out within hours, while his booksBarrel Fever, Holidays on Ice, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denimhave each been best-sellers. The sardonic wit displayed in his SantaLand Diaries has since made him Americas preeminent satiristbrutally honest, often painfully sad, and, above all, truly hilarious.</Text>

<Text>Discovers unexpected common ground in one of the most inflammatory issues of the twenty-first century: the deepening conflict between the Islamic world and the United States. Moving beyond simplistic answers, Anouar Majid argues that the Islamic world and the United States are both in precipitous states of decline because, in each, religious, political, and economic orthodoxies have silenced the voices of their most creative thinkersthe visionary nonconformists, radicals, and revolutionaries who are often dismissed, or even punished, as heretics. </Text>

<Text>Zack and Larry Arnstein know how our government is fighting global terrorism, but what are YOU doing to combat terrorism? Probably not much. The Ultimate Counterterrorist Home Companion can help. It's an easy-to-follow guide with specific instructions on how you can be a soldier in the war on terrorism without leaving your house. This illustrated manual will train you in: Spying on your neighbors; Turning common, household objects into useful, terror-fighting weapons (with the right preparation your spatula can become an effective terrorism deterrent); Baking your way to homeland security. In fact it's not just for you, but to answer the questions your entire family is asking! From the moment you get up in the morning (a different time every morning to keep attackers off balance!), to when you check underneath your car with your Home Car Bomb Detector (instructions included!), to your final closet and under-the-bed check at night, you'll want to keep this book close at hand. (In fact, if you don't buy this book, you are acting in a suspicious manner, in our opinion!)</Text>
