It was a critical moment, and it resulted in seven successive popes remaining ?in exile? for the next seventy years. The city chosen to replace Rome was Avignon. And depending on where you stood at the time they were seventy years of heaven, or of hell?opinions invariably ran to extremes, as did the behaviour of the popes themselves.
It was during this period of exile that the city witnessed some of the most turbulent events in the history of Christendom, among them the suppression of the Knights Templar and the last of the heretical Cathars, the first onslaught of the Black Death, the final collapse of the crusading dream, and the first decades of the Hundred Years War between England and France, in which successive Avignon popes attempted to mediate.</Text></OtherText><MediaFile><MediaFileTypeCode>04</MediaFileTypeCode><MediaFileLinkTypeCode>01</MediaFileLinkTypeCode><MediaFileLink>http://www.unireps.com.au/itemimages/webimages/1904955339.jpg</MediaFileLink></MediaFile><Imprint><ImprintName>SIGNAL BOOKS</ImprintName></Imprint><Publisher><PublishingRole>01</PublishingRole><PublisherName>Signal Books</PublisherName></Publisher><PublishingStatus>02</PublishingStatus><PublicationDate>20070501</PublicationDate><SupplyDetail><SupplierName>UNIREPS</SupplierName><SupplierRole>02</SupplierRole><ProductAvailability>10</ProductAvailability><ExpectedShipDate>20070501</ExpectedShipDate><Price><PriceTypeCode>02</PriceTypeCode><PriceAmount>29.95</PriceAmount></Price></SupplyDetail><MarketRepresentation><AgentName>UNIREPS</AgentName><AgentRole>07</AgentRole><MarketCountry>AU</MarketCountry><MarketPublishingStatus>02</MarketPublishingStatus><MarketDate><MarketDateRole>01</MarketDateRole><Date>20070501</Date></MarketDate></MarketRepresentation></Product>

From 1835 to 1840 he worked as an agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society, attempting to distribute Protestant Testaments in fiercely Catholic Spain. The outcome of this controversial and risky enterprise?though not the one that his employers expected?was The Bible in Spain, an account of his wanderings published in 1843. The book, a classic of travel and observation, has been in print ever since. A century and a half later, Borrow enthusiast Guy Arnold followed in the footsteps of the restless and eccentric Bible salesman, tracing his route through Spain and Portugal. Here, he brings to life the scenery and culture of Spain as well as the complex personality of the man who described it in the 1830s. </Text></OtherText><Imprint><ImprintName>SIGNAL BOOKS</ImprintName></Imprint><Publisher><PublishingRole>01</PublishingRole><PublisherName>Signal Books</PublisherName></Publisher><PublishingStatus>02</PublishingStatus><PublicationDate>20070501</PublicationDate><SupplyDetail><SupplierName>UNIREPS</SupplierName><SupplierRole>02</SupplierRole><ProductAvailability>10</ProductAvailability><ExpectedShipDate>20070501</ExpectedShipDate><Price><PriceTypeCode>02</PriceTypeCode><PriceAmount>44.95</PriceAmount></Price></SupplyDetail><MarketRepresentation><AgentName>UNIREPS</AgentName><AgentRole>07</AgentRole><MarketCountry>AU</MarketCountry><MarketPublishingStatus>02</MarketPublishingStatus><MarketDate><MarketDateRole>01</MarketDateRole><Date>20070501</Date></MarketDate></MarketRepresentation></Product>

What happened to Katie, the precocious pre-adolescent who would people-watch with binoculars as if she were studying birds? Did Eileen have an affair with ?Jacques from New Orleans? or was her son able to stop her in time? Has William, the pedophile on the loose in Volume 1, ever been caught, or is he still out there, slowly driving through the streets hunting his next victim? Get a job. Make friends. Find a good book to curl up with. After landing a job at READ, the newest hypermegabookstore, he feels he may have accomplished all three. All is not peaceable within the stacks, however. Discontent is steadily rising, and it is aimed squarely at Munroe Purvis, a talk show host whose wildly popular book club is progressively lowering the IQ of North America. If you?ve ever thrown a book against a wall in disgust, if you?ve ever loved a novel that no one else can stand, if you obsess over the proper use of punctuation, this may be the novel for you. A weirdly funny story about bookish addictions, Shelf Monkey is the ideal novel for anyone who loves good books. Bruce Franklin shows how menhaden have shaped America's national-and natural-history, and why reckless overfishing now threatens their place in both. Since Native Americans began using menhaden as fertilizer, this amazing fish has greased the wheels of US agriculture and industry. Today, one company ? Omega Protein ? has a monopoly on the menhaden ?reduction industry?. In Franklin's vibrant prose, the decline of a once ubiquitous fish becomes an adventure story, an
exploration of the US political economy, a groundbreaking history of America's emerging ecological consciousness, and an inspiring vision of a growing alliance between environmentalists and recreational anglers.</Text></OtherText><MediaFile><MediaFileTypeCode>04</MediaFileTypeCode><MediaFileLinkTypeCode>01</MediaFileLinkTypeCode><MediaFileLink>http://www.unireps.com.au/itemimages/webimages/9781597261241.jpg</MediaFileLink></MediaFile><Imprint><ImprintName>Island Press</ImprintName></Imprint><Publisher><PublishingRole>01</PublishingRole><PublisherName>Island Press</PublisherName></Publisher><PublishingStatus>09</PublishingStatus><PublicationDate>20070501</PublicationDate><Measure><MeasureTypeCode>01</MeasureTypeCode><Measurement>152</Measurement><MeasureUnitCode>mm</MeasureUnitCode></Measure><Measure><MeasureTypeCode>02</MeasureTypeCode><Measurement>229</Measurement><MeasureUnitCode>mm</MeasureUnitCode></Measure><SupplyDetail><SupplierName>UNIREPS</SupplierName><SupplierRole>02</SupplierRole><ProductAvailability>40</ProductAvailability><ExpectedShipDate /><Price><PriceTypeCode>02</PriceTypeCode><PriceAmount>49.95</PriceAmount></Price></SupplyDetail><MarketRepresentation><AgentName>UNIREPS</AgentName><AgentRole>06</AgentRole><MarketCountry>AU</MarketCountry><MarketPublishingStatus>09</MarketPublishingStatus><MarketDate><MarketDateRole>01</MarketDateRole><Date>20070501</Date></MarketDate></MarketRepresentation></Product>

Since that time, he has answered thousands of questions about birds both at the store as well as in a weekly newspaper. The questions are diverse: how can I attract birds, how can I get rid of the ?bad? birds, why don?t woodpeckers get headaches, why are the birds dropping poop in my pool? Answering the questions has been easy; keeping a straight face has been the hard part. This book is an accessible and quirky ?Birding 101? for the backyard birder.
