<Text>1606 marked the first European sighting of Australia, when the Dutch ship Duyfken landed on Cape York. This gripping book tells the stories of the seafaring explorers, shipwrecks and mutinies that followed, including the voyages of Torres and La Perouse, Dampier and DEntrecasteaux. These are tales of adventure, discovery and navigational triumph in the face of hardship, starvation and fear at the far end of the world.</Text>

<Text>In 1945 Arthur Calwell announced a new immigration policy for Australia requiring an influx of 70,000 migrants a year, and it was hoped that all of them would come from Britain. When insufficient Britons applied the Australian government looked to Italy and Greece and then to refugee camps across Europe. This book looks at the ships that brought these migrants to Australia - some that were never designed to carry passengers or to travel great distances - and their place in maritime and Australian history.</Text>

<Text>The Zuytdorp, one of the great ships of the Dutch East India Company, disappeared without a trace after leaving Cape Town in 1712, en route to Batavia (Jakarta). The ship was carrying a rich cargo including some 250,000 guilders in silver coins. It was nearly two and a half centuries before the mystery of its fate was finally solved. Phillip Playford, one of the wrecks discoverers, gives an engrossing account of an incredible true story: a personal adventure, a fabulous treasure, and some extraordinary incompetence
fact definitely more exciting than fiction.</Text>

<Text>Explains how the navigational problems of Australias huge coastline were conquered by ships that were at the cutting-edge of technology for their time. The story covers the period from antiquity until the arrival of Britains First Fleet at Botany Bay in January 1788 and highlights the rapid improvement of ship construction after the European Renaissance began the trend to reasoned experiment that replaced ignorance and dogma and made possible long return voyages to the ends of the earth.</Text>

<Text>The figure of Captain Cook understandably dominates the story of Pacific exploration, but one of the effects of his fame has been that the many voyages of science and exploration following him to the Pacific have not received the attention they have deserved, especially in Britain. Pioneers of the Pacific aims to correct this imbalance through the voyages of exploration that continued Cooks work of charting the Pacific. These voyages, by William Bligh, George Vancouver, Matthew Flinders, La Perouse and Arthur Phillip, span a time that saw Britain become the worlds leading maritime power.</Text>

<Text>Captain Sir Richard Spencer RN was a nineteenth century man of action. He was adventurous, resourceful, devoted to those in his care. He is remembered today as the early Government Resident of the fledgling settlement in Albany on the south coast of Western Australia. The story of his early life in the Royal Navy of Admiral Lord Nelsons day is told here for the first time. Zealous, intrepid to the point of foolhardiness, and a hero to his men, Captain Spencer was a rising star during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.</Text>

<Text>The wartime loss of Australias pride, HMAS Sydney with all hands on board remains among the greatest riddles of modern maritime history, one that has
teased authorities, naval experts and researchers for more than 60 years.
This is a detailed account of how a chance brush with the past turns to deepening obsession; how an unschooled novice takes on an entrenched
establishment, and often stuffy views, in a bid to help families of the 645 lost sailors win closure. McDonalds struggle to piece together a labyrinth of
facts, theories and, in many cases, elusive false trails makes for compelling reading in this densely woven account. Strange cryptograms, hearsay and new evidence from German survivors of the catastrophe add momentum to a tale of hope, disappointment, and contradiction.</Text>

<Text>The story of the passenger liners operated by the Chandris Group is unique among the major shipping companies through the years. The company grew steadily from within, rather than merging with or buying out other companies. From very small beginnings in the Greek coastal trades, the Chandris family company developed into a renowned concern, at one time operating some of the most famous liners in the world. One ship alone, Australis, made 62 voyages from Europe to Australia bringing over 150,000 new settlers to this country. </Text>

<Text>The celebrations of the first 400 years of relations between The Commonwealth of Australia and The Kingdom of The Netherlands mark a very special and important event for both countries. The shared relationship between the two countries was first established in 1606, when the Dutch vessel Duyfken mapped part of the coast near present day Weipa, Cape York Peninsula, of the continent that would, in time, become known as Australia. This event led to further encounters between early maritime pioneers, and traces of early Dutch influence is still found in such Australian place names as Tasmania and Cape Leeuwin.</Text>

<Text>On the evening of 14 August 1829 the government brig Cyprus was sheltering in Recherche Bay on the remote south-east coast of Tasmania when she was captured by eighteen convicts under the leadership of William Swallow, a prisoner for life. Eight years earlier he had stowed away on a ship to England only to be eventually arrested and sent to Hobart for the second time. After marooning the crew, military guard and passengers on the desolate shore, Swallow skilfully sailed the brig across the Pacific to Tahiti then back to the Tongan Islands and on to Japan before finally scuttling her off the Chinese coast.</Text>

<Text>A gripping narrative about whales and dolphins, and how their fates became intertwined with human history. The story begins 1000 years ago when hunters first took up harpoons and went to sea in search of the rich rewards of meat, oil and bone. Now a highly controversial issue, whale hunts are being superseded by whale watching cruises, but what has been the effect on the survival of cetaceans? Weaving together the scientific and factual narratives in a lively style, Sarah Lazarus explores just why whales became one of the main harvests of the sea, and what lies ahead for cetaceans.</Text>
