<Text>The significance of the AWB scandal extends well beyond its immediate political impact. Its lasting lessons go to the heart of how government and companies are run in Australia. In this book Stephen Bartos explores those lessons, and shows that reform will be needed to provide the assurance that this country is committed to transparency and accountability. </Text>

The book offers fresh perspectives on familiar topics such as the achievement of women?s suffrage and women?s reasons for entering the parliament. <Text>For five centuries, colonialism and modernity have profoundly shaped the cultures of the world. This book traces these interacting long-term historical processes, and the parallel history of anti-colonial movements and ideas. It outlines the rise to global dominance of Europe since the 16th century, and the attendant modernity that shaped and defined this rise.
Gillen and Ghosh show how colonialism and modernity dramatically changed the lives of the colonised peoples, the invading settlers who established overseas colonies, those who remained in Europe, and the diasporas created by invasions, slavery, indentured labour and voluntary migration. </Text>

<Text>Wes Olson?s Gallipoli is a vital contribution to Western Australian history. It is also about an eclectic group of brave, ordinary men who came together on the shores of Gallipoli to help pioneer the ANZAC spirit as their legacy. The story of their deployment is recounted largely in the words of the soldiers themselves. Olson introduces, among others, the larrikin Ben Bailey, heroic Douglas Barrett-Lennard, resourceful John Simpson, and future acclaimed author Albert Facey. He allows you to tread in the shadowy footsteps of the soldiers through each painstaking battle for ground, encompassing everything from minor skirmishes to major encounters, during which many of these men would lose their lives.</Text>

<Text>For 90 years, the Government Railway Workshops at Midland were the largest Industrial workshops in Western Australia, training tradesmen to build and repair locomotive engines and rolling stock, and maintain the State?s railway network that was at the heart of its economic development. Widespread community outrage greeted the State Government?s decision to close the Workshops, but numerous campaigns to prevent the closure were fruitless, and the gates finally shut in March 1994. The Workshops records the history of this important industrial facility, and is the product of two ARC grant-funded history projects that involved more than 200 hours of interviewing past employees, as well as collecting and archiving Workshops documents and photographs of significant note.</Text>

<Text>A gripping narrative about whales and dolphins, and how their fates became intertwined with human history. The story begins 1000 years ago when hunters first took up harpoons and went to sea in search of the rich rewards of meat, oil and bone. Now a highly controversial issue, whale hunts are being superseded by whale watching cruises, but what has been the effect on the survival of cetaceans? Weaving together the scientific and factual narratives in a lively style, Sarah Lazarus explores just why whales became one of the main harvests of the sea, and what lies ahead for cetaceans.</Text>

It outlines the current concerns of the major international players and reviews the response to date, detailing national interests. <Text>The author proposes a new structure for the making of Australian art, which he calls ?a regional state of mind?. A cultural pyramid with a broad community base rooted in community culture and tied to its place of origin and its own special quality of life. He points to works like Summer of the Seventeenth Doll and Cloudstreet, that have resonated profoundly within us and describes how his work in northern NSW and Queensland has shown him that every town, city and suburb has a deep understanding of its own culture. </Text>

<Text>A book to encourage and inspire parents to create delicious and healthy food for their children. It offers practical and clear advice on how to introduce children to healthy, real food, and how by doing this, parents can positively influence their children?s eating habits for the rest of their lives. All of the recipes have been extensively tested and selected not only for their nutritional value, but just as much for their ease of preparation and for their appeal to children. Woven throughout the recipes is a lot of other important and useful information, ranging from how to cope with allergies and food intolerances, to introducing more vegetables into your children?s diet. </Text>

<Text>A highly innovative new tramping guide, that has been developed around the latest generation of ?bird?s eye? computer-generated maps. These completely accurate panoramic overviews are constructed from map data, but because they can recreate a view of the landscape from any angle or height they provide a remarkably readable and clear way of understanding the lie of the land. For trampers, these bird?s eye maps offer a superb way of showing a tramping route in three dimensions, which cannot be done with a conventional topographical map. In this book the 40 most popular tramps in New Zealand are featured, each illustrated with at least one bird?s eye map.</Text>

Situated in the path of an opencast mine, it was entirely removed in the late 1980s to access coal for the Huntly Power Station. <Text>Into the Light is a serious, but readable history of photography in New Zealand. It provides a comprehensive survey of New Zealand?s most significant photographers and is aimed at a general audience. The photographers featured include early colonial professionals such as the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, and William and Fred Tyree, along with those documenting New Zealand?s burgeoning identity in the twentieth Centurey, such as John Pascoe during World War II and the gritty, authentic photography of Les Cleveland. Current senior practioners, such as Marti Friedlander, Peter Peryer, Ans Westra, Anne Noble and Laurence Aberhart all are represented, along with more contemporary practitioners such as Fiona Pardington, Gavin Hipkins and Yvonne Todd.</Text>

<Text>Running a small number of animals is the most popular use of lifestyle farms, but for those without farming experience this can be a daunting challenge. Lifestyle Farming in New Zealand addresses this head-on. Written by a veterinarian with extensive experience of working with lifestyle farmers, and also of running a small holding himself, the book was inspired by a frequent comment, ?I wish there was a simple book on how to do it?. </Text>

<Text>The literature of New Zealand rarely reflects the amazing, strong and vibrant culture of the Pacific. The Creative New Zealand Pacific Arts Committee took the initiative in 2003 of organising a number of creative writing workshops for new Pacific writers. They published the best of this writing in First Draft. Building on this and other initiatives, Huia Publishers in partnership with the Pacific Arts Committee present this anthology of new writing from emerging and established Pacific writers. </Text>

<Text>Hamas won an overwhelming electoral victory in January 2006, overturning many assumptions regionally and globally. Branded as terrorist by Israel and the West, it is the largest Palestinian militant Islamist organisation, formed fifteen years ago at the beginning of the first intifada. This book charts the origins of Hamas among the Muslim Brotherhood, details the influence of its exiled leadership in Syria and elsewhere, and sets out its internal structure and political objectives.</Text>

<Text>After the toppling of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan the important but overlooked former Soviet states of Central Asia became for a brief time key players in the US-led war on terror. American and other Western military and economic aid poured in on the assumption that stability and greater democratisation would follow in its wake. But only a few years later the West?s strategy to exert geopolitical influence in the region is in tatters. How did it all go so wrong?</Text>

<Text>The debate surrounding Islamist violence remains locked in oppositional sterility. Are such attacks perpetrated by Islamists as a matter of belief or do they reflect socio-economic realities? Is the suicide bomber a pathological case, as the psychologist maintains, or a clever strategist, as those steeped in the geopolitical approach claim? This book aims to transcend both the culturalist or underdevelopment explanations by focusing on the highly variegated nature of the phenomenon.</Text>

<Text>Vigilantes and organised vigilantism are a growing phenomenon, as this book amply demonstrates. From Northern Ireland to West Africa, from Bombay or Moscow, vigilante movements and ideologies have widespread appeal. This is the first book to offer a comprehensive overview of contemporary vigilantism in its relation to different members of society and to state authorities. It explores how vigilantes produce and reproduce themselves within shifting climates of hate and fear; it addresses their historical antecedents;
explores the cults and cultures of conflict associated with vigilantism, and analyses the modes, meanings and methods of vigilante vilolence.</Text>

<Text>?CHARLES DICKENS, Fran?ais naturalis?, et Citoyen de Paris.? This is how Dickens signed a letter from France to his friend John Forster in 1847. Behind the joke lay a fascination for French life and culture and a sense of affinity with the country that would take him back often and that would find expression in some of his finest work. Dickens on France brings together short stories, extracts from novels and travel writing. Among its journalistic highlights are accounts of a train journey from London to Paris, a rough Channel crossing, the pleasures of Boulogne, and Parisian life in the 1850s and 1860s.</Text>

<Text>In 1975 Christopher Mayhew and Michael Adams delivered their powerful indictment of Western media coverage of the Israel-Palestine issue. Both men, journalist and politician, had direct experience of the situation in Palestine and both felt passionately that a curtain of concealment and deceit had been drawn over media discussion of the Israeli colonization of Palestine, resulting in misinformed and biased perceptions. The importance of their discussion of the Zionist management of the British media in Publish it Not cannot be overstated. It was pivotal in the process that has unmasked a number of myths.</Text>

<Text>This book provides undergraduate students with the straightforward answers they need to questions about planning and composing university essays. At the planning stage, where many students flounder, the book presents the ?what/how/why? strategy, which encourages students to move from mere description of a topic towards interpretive analysis. The contributing authors approach every topic -- from outlining to proofreading -- from a cross-curricular perspective.</Text>

<Text>Drawing on the most recent social, economic, cultural, and intellectual research, Mark Konnert provides an engrossing overview of Europe during a highly dynamic and turbulent historical period. The book argues that while territorial trade-offs, resource and wealth distribution, and social conflict contributed to a century and a half of revolts, civil wars, and witch hunts, religion was the main catalyst for the violence that rocked the continent.</Text>

<Text>The accused was Anna Roleffes, known as Tempel Anneke. She was arrested on the charge of witchcraft in June of 1663. She was found guilty and was executed on December 30th that same year. Her trial was long and involved, with many witnesses from several towns and villages. While other witchcraft materials exist, this is the only text available in English that allows readers to follow a witchcraft trial from beginning to end. Highly readable, this astonishing narrative is perfectly suited to being read as a complete document. The useful additions of introduction, appendices, glossary, and index provide readers with important background information so that they can engage directly with the material. </Text>

<Text>The deep and challenging questions of war are examined and discussed, from such varied perspectives as just war theory, realism, pacifism and international law. While generous and comprehensive, the book does pay special attention to international law and just war theory. The book offers a combination of both theory and practice, looking intensively at cases ranging from the Second World War up to the present day, with particular emphasis placed on the very latest issues, from 9/11 to the War on Terror, from Kosovo to East Timor, and from Afghanistan to Iraq.</Text>

<Text>The first American sailor known to write his own autobiography, Ashley Bowen remains a valuable storyteller who can speak to today's readers about the maritime world in the age of sail. Ashley Bowen began his seafaring career at the age of eleven. After leaving the sea, Bowen spent the rest of his days as a ship-rigger in Marblehead, Massachusetts. A witness to significant historical events, including the British conquest of Canada and the American Revolution, Ashley Bowen confounds today's audience with his eighteenth-century interpretation of events?an interpretation informed by his deeply religious beliefs and his suspicion of Yankee patriotism. </Text>

<Text>In the wake of the Taliban nightmare, Afghanistan must tackle serious problems before it can emerge as a confident, independent nation. Security continues to deteriorate; suicide bombings, convoy ambushes, and insurgent attacks are all too common. Effective state building will depend upon eliminating the national security crisis and enhancing the rule of law. This book offers a blueprint for moving toward greater democracy and prosperity.</Text>

<Text>It has long been observed that Impressionists and their followers heeded Charles Baudelaire's call to paint "modern life." Paris and the Countryside explores modernity, a cultural notion, with a parallel emphasis on the development of modernism, an art historical concept. Essays focus on the city and the countryside. Together they examine the notions of modernity and modernism in late nineteenth-century France, acknowledging, summarizing, and interpreting the wide array of artistic responses to the modern world. Impressionists Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Post-Impressionists ?mile Bernard, Georges Seurat, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Vincent van Gogh are among the artists whose work is represented in this collection. </Text>

<Text>How is it possible for practitioners of the healing arts to cope with the deaths of children and the devastating grief of their families? Physician Robert McKelvey looks squarely at this painful question and gets to the heart of it in When a Child Dies. Although the stories he tells are replete with heartbreak, he achieves a higher purpose by illuminating the successes and failures of medical training in helping doctors and nurses confront these deaths.</Text>

<Text>Horns and Beaks completes Ken Carpenter's series on the major dinosaur types. As with his volumes on armored, carnivorous, and sauropodomorph dinosaurs, this book collects original and new information, reflecting the latest discoveries and research on these two groups of animals. The Ornithopods include Iguanodon, one of the first dinosaurs ever discovered and analyzed, and perhaps the most common and best-documented group, the hadrosaurs or "duckbilled dinosaurs." The Ceratopsians include Triceratops, known for its distinctive three-horned skull and protective collar.</Text>

<Text>A true and intriguing story that exposes French colonial motives in Morocco. A supposedly humanitarian doctor turns out to be a racist and a misogynist, yet he's a martyr for the French "civilizing mission" in Morocco. This readable history does an excellent job of pulling together key historical and cultural issues that have played out in the contemporary political arena.

<Text>A communist society on Mars, the Russian revolution, and class struggle on two planets are the subjects of two arresting science fiction novels by Alexander Bogdanov (1873?1928), one of the early organizers and prophets of the Russian Bolshevik party. The red star is Mars, but it is also the dream set to paper of the society that could emerge on earth after the dual victory of the socialist and scientific-technical revolutions. While portraying a harmonious and rational socialist society, Bogdanov sketches out the problems that will face industrialized nations, whether socialist or capitalist. Included are the 1908 edition of the novel Red Star, the novel Engineer Menni (1913), and a poem, A Martian Stranded on Earth (1927). Essays by Richard Stites and Loren R. Graham provide the political, social, and cultural context for these classic works of Russian science fiction.</Text>

<Text>Josephine Baker (1906-75) was a dancer, singer, actress, author, politician, militant, and philanthropist, whose images and cultural legacy have survived beyond the hundredth anniversary of her birth. This is a critical cultural study of the Franco-American performer whose appearances as the savage dancer Fatou shocked the world.</Text>

<Text>The legends that have grown up around Elizabeth are fascinating, but as this book shows, the truth is just as remarkable. In Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend, Clark Hulse brings Elizabeth to life, combining text and images to tell her story through the objects handed down by history. Commemorating the four hundredth anniversary of Elizabeth's death, this handsome volume, published in conjunction with exhibitions organized by the Newberry Library and the American Library Association, contains more than a hundred photographs of books, manuscripts, maps, letters, paintings, clothing, furniture, and many more artifacts dating from her reign. Each of these objects tells a story, and Hulse uses them as a starting point for a broad and thorough examination of Elizabeth and the society in which she lived. </Text>

<Text>In response to cries from her fans for more! more! more!, Mary K. Witte has followed up her original cult poetry classic Redneck Haiku with Redneck Haiku: Double-Wide Edition. This expanded version contains not only the best verses from the first edition, but over 150 brand new redneck poems that are sure to generate the same big laughs as the original.

Once again, the redneck lifestyle gets the black tie treatment through the hilariously contrasting filter of the formal Japanese haiku. Each of the nearly 250 wickedly funny poems contains just three lines and seventeen syllables, yet together they address the whole spectrum of redneck culture: RVs, Wal-Mart, beer, pop tarts, pickups, monster trucks, NASCAR, boats, trailer parks, barns, hunting, shotguns, Las Vegas, the lottery, and more. You'll howl with laughter until the cows, chickens and, of course, hound dogs come home!</Text>

<Text>Los Angeles has always been as much a star in film noir as any actor, and here renowned film historians Alain Silver and James Ursini explore the world of noir cinema in the context of Los Angeles. The book features dozens of noir and neo-noir landmark films from Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Kiss Me Deadly, and Touch of Evil in the classic period (1940?1960) to such neo-noir notables as Chinatown, L.A. Confidential, Mulholland Drive, and Pulp Fiction. This book illustrates how these noir films use L.A.?s diverse geography and architecture to convey a unique vision of urban corruption and existential fatalism while chronicling the ever-changing cityscape of this noir character?Los Angeles.</Text>

<Text>Helen Edmundson has an outstanding track record for adapting well-known stories for the stage. Her dramatisations of Anna Karenina and The Mill on the Floss for Shared Experience, and Coram Boy for the National Theatre, have won awards and consistently thrilled audiences. Shared Experience have now commissioned her to revisit the Orestes story: the result, based loosely on Euripides, is bound to bring us gripping and passionate drama which both respects the original and gives it a modern theatrical shape.</Text>

<Text>The very near future. The Conservatives are back in power?but only just, with a majority of three. A controversial vote is coming up, and the Whips Office is using all its guile to head off a rebellion, not helped by the equally cunning shenanigans employed by the Opposition Whip. The climax comes when a bunch of placard-carrying protesters is deliberately let on to the floor of the House in a last desperate attempt not to lose the vote.</Text>

<Text>Therese Raquin is a hauntingly powerful psychological study, described at the time as ?a steamy story of sexual passion plumbing the murky depths of murder, revenge and retribution?. Th?r?se is trapped in a loveless marriage to Mme Raquin?s sickly son, Camille. Seduced by his best friend, Laurent, she conspires with him to murder her husband.
